Digital Transformation Integrating User Ecosystems

Overview

Client

United States Space Force, Space Operations Command (SpOC)

Process

Research, Strategy, User Ecosystems, Interviews, Workshops, Service Design, Project Management

Outcome

Aligned User Ecosystem to Enterprise Data Management's Roles and Responsibilities

I designed a discovery workshop to identify the values, attributes, roles, responsibilities, and obstacles for developing an enterprise data management model while conducting secondary research identifying user archetypes and research objectives

Disclaimer: The nature of this work is confidential, and per DoD compliance, the case study contains fictionalized data and omits project details. The case study presents a summary of my experience and design process.

Problem Statement

The project explored digital transformation through enterprise data management governance. I established a research scope focused on understanding user ecosystems, current assets, and user obstacles to reveal desired system capabilities.

Results

Research and workshops aligned stakeholders to develop the initial enterprise data management model, influencing priorities for data architecture and user engagement research.

Future Recommendations

  • Utilize talent management to align the EDM model’s roles, objectives, and responsibilities with current talent development objectives.

  • Prioritize research efforts with key partners, improving collaboration and data triangulation efficiency.

  • Determine committee member requirements by synthesizing task analysis with user ecosystems.

  • Socialize research objectives and findings showcasing benefit audience members

Challenge

The primary challenge of this project is the vast capabilities of enterprise platforms. Project management was essential to addressing the challenges of conducting multiple parallel research efforts.

My Responsibilities

  • As the Lead UX Designer, I lead my team to develop project objectives and research goals.

  • I coordinated research and design activities while collaborating with stakeholders and key partners, establishing cohesion through design workshops.

  • I captured user experiences through interviews, data triangulation, workshop analysis, and insight generation creating testable conceptual solutions resulting in holistic models for data governance, data flows, and user ecosystems.

Initial Task

Project Audit

  • Conducted audit evaluating the project’s status and prior efforts to determine objectives and goals

  • Created strategic summaries which influenced project deliverables

    • Data Governance Charter, Strategy, and Roadmap

  • Developed UX Design Benefit presentation providing needed design education and awareness

Data Strategy Roadmap

Roadmap derived strategic summaries drafting timeframes

Project Management: Parallel Research Efforts

  • Utilized Kanban project management methods to coordinate and conduct parallel research activities.

  • Mapped User Ecosystems to connect research efforts to universal framework VAULATIS scaling insights across the enterprise

Research Efforts

  • Enterprise Data Management: Standards, Best Practices, Maturity State, ect

  • Unified Data Library (UDL): Champion, Educate, Utilize, Status Quo, etc.

  • Data Architecture: Enterprise Mapping, Resource Collection, User Collaboration, etc.

  • User Engagement: Experiences, Obstacles, UDL Utilization, Goals, Tasks, etc.

  • Key Partnerships: Communication, Outreach, Shared Strategies, Resources, Efforts, etc.

Kanban: Research Progress

Discovery Workshop

  • Designed a workshop to explore values, benefits, and governance for enterprise data management while identifying unique SpOC requirements.

  • Facilitate activities gaining participant alignment for value pillars standardizing governance lines of effort and responsibilities.

Workshop Outcome

  • Synthesized research with workshop activities establishing a unified enterprise data management model

User Ecosystem Map

  • Collected change signals from user interviews and monthly working groups to identify potential new features and future needs

  • Mapped related mission objectives and shared tasks to develop user archetypes connected through similar obstacles and constraints

Ex: User Archetypes

Connected archetypes based on primary task roles related to the Unified Data Library

  • Governance User - Controlling influence over user experience through policy and standards implementation

  • Strategic User -Directs governances user without direct or indirect experience using the platform

  • Developer User - Builds and maintains the platform through indirect feedback of the platform’s by-products
