Developing navigation options through Structured Authoring

Memorandum

Summary

I developed the information architecture and then assisted with creating content resulting in structuring content for a print document and a document portal website.

  • Process: Research, user roles, task analysis, information architecture, card sorting, tree testing, content creation and synthesis, wireframes, usability testing, prototype

Insight

  • Using structured authoring to develop tags uncovers secondary navigation options while revealing relationships between tags applicable to information architecture.

Outcome

My initial attempt at organizing content through a content audit provided a starting point but didn’t assist with revealing the connections between topics. Realizing that users need relevance to navigate content, I pivoted and used card sorting and tree testing results to illustrate relevance and dependencies.

Lessons Learned

  • Organizing relies on mental models to establish relational attributes

  • Effective search results depend on shared expectations and characteristics

Interactive prototype used during usability testing to reveal the different pathways used to find information

Usability testing revealed that users often clicked the search bar if they had a specific issue to solve. Intriguing content did not entice users to explore if they were seeking a particular answer.
